I am a student of the Criminal Justice Program at ASU. Tonight I had an exam that took me till late, so it was take out for dinner. I tried something new at a little restaurant chain called Rumbi. Rumbi serves Hawaiian style food, the location I ate at was in Dana Park near the U.S. 60 and Valvista in Mesa. I was a bit unsure what to order as I was new to the restaurant, however the employee taking my order patiently went over the menu with me and helped me narrow down what I wanted to order. He even let me sample a few of the sauces that were offered. I ended up ordering a large rice bowl with pulled pork, coconut rice, and honey orange sauce. I have to say in the jungle of take out restaurants, Rumbi was a nice surprise, the rice had excellent flavor that hits you like a breeze of coconut. The pork also had good flavor and wasn't overly greasy as pulled pork can be sometimes. The bowl also had assorted steamed vegetables and red beans in the rice which also added a flavorful element to the dish. Often times take out food gives you a gross feeling upon finishing the meal, how you feel after your meal this is a good test for how quality the food was. Garbage food makes you feel like garbage, good food makes you feel good. Upon finishing Rumbi's large rice bowl with pork, I felt full but good, Rumbi had good food. I rated the food a 9 out of 10 as it was fresh, prompt and very good. I would rate the service a 5 out of 5 as the person taking my order was very helpful and professional in helping me place my order. The facility was also very good, it was a smaller place, but it was clean with a fun contemporary Hawaiian atmosphere, for these reasons I rated the facility a 4 out of 5. This gives a total score of 18 out of 20.
I typically give ratings of 10 out of 10 or 5 out of 5 only when the food, service and the facilities are absolutely exceptional and possibly in the best in the valley. Very good food, service and facilities are typically rated 4's and 8's or 9's because although their very good, they may not be the absolute best. I rated Rumbi accordingly, the food and facilities were very good, but not the absolute best in the valley, The service however, was some of the best service I have experienced in the food industry which is why I have given it a 5.
In addition I rate restaurants within their perspective classes, for instance a strip mall little restaurant could make a dish that could qualify as a 9 or even a 10 while a top tier gourmet restaurant could make a dish that only scored a 7. This wouldn't necessarily mean that the strip malls food is better than the top tiers restaurants, it just means that the strip mall's restaurant scored better within its perspective class of strip mall restaurants.
